A paradise for birds, insects, deer, otters, snakes and walkers
We are constantly surprised by the tameness of local wildlife and you can sit
and watch deer, badgers, foxes, squirrels, jackdaws, green woodpeckers and buzzards That's just our garden!
How we love watching the wildlife eat our garden! Incidentally there is a reason its called Snakes Lane.
We are the closest cottage to internationally regarded bird sanctuaries
such as Westhay National Nature Reserve, Shapwick Heath, Ham Wall and Catcott. (click for more info)
Many of these sites have beautiful new bird hides you will see in the gallery, the result of large environmental grants for exceptional birdwatching opportunities.
You can be birdwatching in 15 minutes from the house and back for breakfast before 10 o'clock.
If you don’t want to walk there you can sit in the garden at dawn on a still day and hear the booming bitterns!
If you have never heard of murmurations then you may be lucky seeing thousands of starlings flying back to roost directly over the cottage each day just before sunset.
The monthly guide to all the reserves is in a new book by Alison Uren called
'The Wildlife of the Avalon Marshes
